Many athletes have made the transition from one sport to another at one point in their professional careers. While some have been successful, others have not. When UFC 81: Breaking Point takes place this Saturday, Brock Lesnar hopes his transition is a successful one.
Lesnar, a former amateur wrestler in College and professional wrestler with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), is hoping to make a major impact at UFC 81, from Las Vegas, Nevada and prove that he can become a successful combatant within the walls of the Octagon.
Wrestling fans and UFC fans alike have been anticipating his debut in the Octagon for quite sometime. However, while Lesnar may seem confident in his interviews, he will face a major challenge when he collides with former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, who has proven himself to be amongst the best in MMA combat.
Much has been made of Lesnar's physique. Weighing in at 265 lbs. and standing at 6'3", many are wondering what type of impact, if any, Lesnar will have in the Octagon? While he may not exactly be the most knowledgeable at MMA combat, Lesnar's background in College wrestling will be of help, especially when you consider his credentials. He was a National Junior Champion with Bismarck Junior College in 1998 after which he proceeded to win two Big 10 Championships with University of Minnesota. He would go on to NCAA National Wrestling Champion.
Heading into his first UFC bout, many people have looked to his official MMA debut last year to get an idea of what Lesnar will bring to fight. Lesnar over-powered Min Soo Kim in their October 2007 encounter. Lesnar proceeded to punch Min Soo Kim with such intensity that Kim had no other choice but to tap out. Lesnar may not be able to do the same thing to Frank Mir this Saturday, but if Lesnar brings that same intensity to his fight with Mir, Lesnar no doubt will present a serious challenge for Mir.
Heading into the fight, Lesnar has appeared very confident that he will come-out on top this weekend, even to the point where he has shrugged off the fact that Mir previously had broke Tim Sylvia's arm. In an interview with UFC, he stated that he feels no pressure heading into his fight. He also commented on the fact that he is looking forward to facing off with Mir and that he is determined to make the best of his opportunity inside the Octagon.
With Lesnar's well-known strength and power, as well as his confidence in his own abilities, this Saturday's UFC 81: Breaking Point, may very well prove to be the beginning of a successful MMA career for Brock Lesnar.
