This week's episode of The Ultimate Fighter sees the first fight of the second round, with experienced Roy 'Big Country' Nelson fight young up-and-comer Justin Wren.
The story picks up from last week’s episode where ex-football player Matt Mitrione, though victorious, took some heavy hits from hard-hitting Hawiaain Scott Junk. After a bit of complaining post-fight, notably without much sympathy from TUF household, Mitrione is taken to the hospital for screening. When he doesn’t return to the house that night rumours roam that he has some form of brain damage and concussion. There is much speculation amongst the house that should Mitrione not be allowed to fight which of the defeated fighters will be brought back into the contest. Naturally the recently-defeated Junk and Kimbo Slice have their hands up for the challenge. All to no avail, however, and Mitrione says he’s good to go, despite being slower off the mark than typical. Gags and GigglesStill frustrated by all his losses this season, Coach Rampage Jackson puts chickens into the cars of Rashad Evans and his fellow coaches. The joke backfires, though, when Evans and company find the gag hysterical and get new rental cars from the UFC organization. Jackson remarks with honesty that he ‘just can’t win’. The rivalry will continue next week as the coaches go head-to-head in this year’s ‘coaches challenge’ for $10,000 in a game of beach volleyball. Wren versus Big CountryIn a much talked-about fight Texan Justin Wren, 22, tees up against this season’s favourite Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson, 32. With Wren coming from a wrestling background and Nelson a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is unclear what will happen in this fight. Against the odds the fight stays standing and Wren seems to win in the first round, landing some good shots and displaying more aggressiveness against a cagey Nelson. Obvious holes in his game are seen, however, with the consistent dropping of his hands and some wild shots well off the mark. In accordance with the audience’s reactions, round two goes to the Las Vegas-based Nelson whose shots seem to do more damage. Obvious to fans, however, is that neither fighter had much steam at the end of the ten minutes as both were truly gassed before long. By the end of the round neither looked fully-prepared to carry on, though post-fight Nelson exclaims that he probably would have won by TKO. Fight DecisionWith some contention amongst Evans and the other fighters, everyone was surprised when the close fight didn’t go to the third round. Big Country still looks set to take this season’s win, though a few chinks in his armour are now more evident. UFC President Dana White remains unimpressed.
