Guillard And Diaz Top Outstanding Card

Sep 17, 2009 Dean Parr

Nate Diaz defeats Melvin Guillard by submission on a night full of excellent fights.

Going into this event, no one would have expected all four fights aired on UFC Ultimate Fight Night 19 to be outstanding. However, all four fights shown were very good.

Nate Diaz Beats Melvin Guillard

In the main event, Nick Diaz fought Melvin Guillard, and won via submssion after a guillotine choke.

Guillard probably took the first round with his heavy handed striking and good head movement. He knocked Diaz down, and furthermore, a bad cut opened near the right eye of Diaz, which made this Guillard's round for sure.

Guillard started the second round well, but made a massive error. He shot for a takedown, and fell into the guillotine choke of one of the best submission fighters around. Diaz was more than happy to oblige the invitation to tap Guillard out, and this marked a very abrupt ending, to arguably the worst fight on the televised card.

Gray Maynard Outpoints Roger Huerta

Roger Huerta gave his last fight in the UFC a really good go, but the raw ability of Gray Maynard was just too much for him to handle. Huerta did hurt Maynard in the first round with a combination, but rounds two and three definitely belonged to Maynard.

He controlled the fight well, counter punching effectively, and nearly finished Huerta with a sharp looking kimura in the third round. Huerta showed good heart to last the distance, but ultimately just didn't have the tools to compete with Maynard, who really did look good.

Carlos Condit Narrowly Beats Jake Ellenberger

Jake Ellenberger put in a commendable performance despite coming up short to Carlos Condit. Ellenberger showed his great power in the first round, flooring the 'Natural Born Killer' multiple times. His kicks looked dangerous too, and Condit struggled to survive.

While the first was contested standing for the most part, the second session was fought on the ground. Condit did have a narrow advantage here, but the fact Ellenberger got two takedowns made this a hard round to score.

The third also had excellent action. Condit just did enough to pull the fight out of the jaws of defeat, winning via split decision, but Jake Ellenberger will be back in the UFC for sure, as this performance showed he definitely has what it takes at this level.

Nate Quarry Tops Tim Credeur

An outstanding battle opened the televised card, as Nate 'the Rock' Quarry slugged it out with Tim Credeur. In the first, Quarry was badly hurt by the punches of Credeur, and barely avoided getting caught in a rear naked choke.

The second round was an absolute war. Credeur started fast and rocked Quarry only to get floored by a massive right hand himself. Quarry maintained some ground and pound and stayed on top to steal the round.

The third remarkably opened in much the same way the second did. However, the rest of the round was closely contested, although the edge in power and accuracy was always with 'the Rock', who earned a unanimous decision.

The Perfect Prelude To 'The Ultimate Fighter 10'

The UFC couldn't have hoped for a better show than Ultimate Fight Night 19 to set the scene for TUF 10. Hopefully, the reality show will be able to achieve the dizzy heights of this event.
